Mrauk U, Feb 2016
Mruak U (pronouned as mraw-oo) is 1.5 hrs flight (to Sittwe) and another arduous 7 hrs boat ride up North from Yangon. It’s relatively unscathed of a sleepy village. It is Myanmar’s second most famous archaeological site but lack of government promotion, means this is unlikely to change in the short term. It also means a photographers’ destination all to ourselves dispersed of tourists.
Highlight of the trip was a visit to the Chin villages to see the last of a dying breed of tattoo-faced women, done to their face at a young age to prevent enemy tribes from kidnapping them.
