Guilin, May 2018
The word Guilin inevitably transcend our mind to associate with the overflowing belt of bizarre mountains which are magically rounded at the top. These incredible limestone rock formations are actually found in the outskirt of Guilin. Yangshuo is one of the popular location to soak up the majestic sight, and provides inspiration for many poets and artists.
The Li River which is widely dubbed the soul of Guilin, runs 83km long through the karsts. Along this river, a handful of fishermen using little more than a simple homespun raft and a gas lamp to light their way, partnered with some well trained cormorants to grab their catch. Cormorant fishing is a 1,300-year old fishing technique. It is indeed free exploitation of labour! However, cormorant fishing is fading away, so it was a surreal experience to take in this scene.
Shooting landscape was not a difficult skill. It's mainly the technicalities and exercise some patience. Apart from the mountain shots, I’m pleased in the limited time we had I was able to grasp a handful of nice street shots that fulfilled my favourite street genre and culminates the trip.
Kidding. Description will be a misnomer. These birds can dive to great length and submerge for a long period of time to catch their prey with the hope of self consuming. But the ring encircled the bird’s neck will prevent it from swallowing, and the owner will claim the catch. The enslaved cormorant is destined to work for life for his owner. Poor thing.
